Weekly DaySpring Undergrad Lunch -- Every Monday, at 12:15 p.m., a group of DaySpring undergrads meets in the Plaza between the SUB and the Carroll Science Building for lunch. Come join us next week! Missions DaySpring Mission(s) Conversation Sunday, March 21st, 5:30. Please join together for the continuation of the conversation about missions at DaySpring. In January we gathered around tamales and posed questions that came to us when we considered what missions looks like at and through DaySpring and DaySpringers. We'll continue the conversation over some sort of food, this time more in small group format. This is for everyone who is interested in what mission(s) means at DaySpring and for each of us. Your input and participation will be very welcome. Leading up to the conversation, we are including articles each week in the newsletter that may help our thinking and prayers about what it means to be on God's mission. This week's article is the third and final chapter (for our purposes) from David Bosch's Transforming Mission. In this chapter, Bosch discusses the monastic mission. In recent years there has been an upsurge in interest and appreciation for the monastic life as one of prayer, community, and service. Whereas once the monastic life was seen as inward looking, isolated, and reteat-ist, it is more and more being seen as renewing, ordering, and hopeful for a fragmenting world. This new appreciation has taken shape in what is often called a new monasticism, which is a general description of intentional, prayerful Christian community lived in places that are often right in the middle of cities by married people, singles, and families who share an openness to one another in community and their neighbors as friends. Bosch describes the ancient monastic movement as "In a world ruled by the love of self, the monastic communities were a visible sign and preliminary realization of a world ruled by the love of God (230)." What you will find in these few pages is a description of a Christian movement that did not set out to 'do mission' or to be 'missionary' in this or that activity and goal, but were missionary by the way they ordered their lives and approached the world around them. By slow, patient, generous living, oriented to the love of God, they changed the world. As part of a church, DaySpring, whose life takes on some of the same rhythms naturally and joyfully together, I hope you'll take a few minutes to enjoy this part of the Christian story. Enjoy. Formation Youth Minister Opening A search for a new youth minister is underway! DaySpring's Coordinating Council, in an effort to include a broad range of long-time youth parents, new youth parents, soon-to-be-youth parents, and volunteers, has assembled a Youth Minister Search Committee of six members: Andrea Moore, Wes Eades, Dale Barron, Hillary Train, Dan Train, and Anna Henderson, with Eric Howell offering guidance as needed. If you know someone who might be a good fit for the youth minister position, please encourage him or her to apply. Applicants should send a resume, letter of interest, and three references to Anna Henderson or to the DaySpring general email address (dayspring@ourdayspring.org). If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact any of the search committee members. It's Time to reserve your child's spot at Children's Camp! Passport Children's Camp, for children who have completed grades 3-6, will take place July 19-22 at Camp Buckner. To learn more about Passport, go to http://www.passportcamps.org/home/kids/Kids%21_2010/Kids%21_Camp.html. The cost to attend is $238 and financial aid is available. Please contact Tiffani Harris ASAP if your child will be attending children's camp this year. We have to reserve our spots for camp and we need a strong head count so the church can put a deposit down. Thank you. Lenten Ministry of Silence Sundays During Lent 8:45 AM - 9:30 AM Stokes Chapel During this season of Lent, DaySpringers are invited to gather on Sunday mornings for a Ministry of Silence. Each week we will meditate on a passage from the Lenten scriptures to quiet our minds and lead us into silent prayer, allowing the Spirit to open our hearts and draw us deeper into the heart of God. Our time together will include sacred readings and contemplative chants to help cultivate a silence that permeates and nourishes our interior prayer. For those who are interested, we will have resources available with suggestions on how to use silence to deepen the experience of prayer. Childcare is not able to be provided during this time. Women's Lenten Prayer Group Wednesdays in Lent 5:30-7:00 p.m. in Stokes Chapel childcare available As part of your Lenten practice, we invite you to join DaySpring women during Lent as we gather to pray with and for one another, learn and practice spiritual disciplines, and walk the Stations of the Cross. Men's Lenten Group and Contemplative Prayer Update -- During Lent, Contemplative Prayer will begin at 5:30 in Eric's office. All men are invited to Prayer as well as any women who do not plan to participate in the Women's Lenten Group (which meets in the Chapel). Following prayers, at 6:00 p.m., all men are invited to stay for about an hour of group discussion and spiritual formation. Hope you can join in. Jesus: Master of Wisdom Contemplative Workshop, March 5-6 -- This contemplative workshop led by Michael Sciretti, Jr.,Ph.D. examines early parables and sayings of Jesus in order to elucidate his timeless contemplative teachings and practices so that we can be empowered to awaken to his kingdom. The workshop takes place March 5-6 (Friday, 7:00-9:00 pm and Saturday, 9:00-4:00 pm). There will be time for discussion, interaction with the ideas and practices, and contemplative silence. There are two contemplative worship services included as part of this workshop: one on Friday night and one that concludes our time together on Saturday. We will experiment with contemplative chants in various languages, such as Aramaic, Greek, and English. Cost is $50 per person and $40 for additional family member. Location is 2204 Meadow Dr., across the street from Lake Shore Baptist Church. Stewardship Administrative Assistant Position Opening -- DaySpring is seeking to hire a new administrative assistant.
