Missions DaySpring Mission(s) Conversation Sunday, March 21st, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Please join together for the continuation of the conversation about missions at DaySpring. In January we gathered around tamales and posed questions that came to us when we considered what missions looks like at and through DaySpring and DaySpringers. We'll continue the conversation over homemade soup, this time more in small group format. This is for everyone who is interested in what mission(s) means at DaySpring and for each of us. Your input and participation will be very welcome. Children's care and activities will be provided. Leading up to the conversation, we are including articles each week in the newsletter that may help our thinking and prayers about what it means to be on God's mission. This week's article, chapter two from The Heart of the World: An Introduction to Contemplative Christianity, is from Father Thomas Keating, one of the founders of the centering prayer movement and contemplative spirituality. Keating states, "There is no opposition between action and contemplation." He then goes on to describe some of the differences of emphasis, but that "these particularities must not be emphasized to the detriment of the ultimate spirituality which belongs to every Christian." Tracing the Christian's practice of the faith through a (monastic-like) rule of life, Keating concludes, "The criterion of true Christian spirituality, affirmed by the Gospel over and over again, is the practical and concrete love of neighbor which leads us to make the sacrifice of our own desire, convenience, and comfort, in order to meet the needs of others." A non-DaySpring friend reflected to me recently that in his opinion DaySpring is as strongly positioned to have a meaningful and powerful ministry in the community as any church he knows. He suggested this is so because of the spiritual grounding that has been practiced at DaySpring for many years. The culture of DaySpring has centered around worship, living simply, deepening friendships, reading scripture slowly, praying with open ears, and embracing others in the name of Love. These traits--practiced by many of us in a variety of ways for years--will serve us well as we continue to seek how we continue to mature in our contemplative, worshipful manner, receiving and giving this community as a gift of God. I hope you'll enjoy the article and will bring its insights with you next Sunday evening. Hospitality & Community Meals for Our New Moms -- Aaron & Kelly Thompson and Greg & Ivy Hamerly recently welcomed a new baby to their family. We would like to help them as they transition to life with their little ones by providing meals. Please contact Rebecca Edwards to volunteer to make a meal for the Thompsons or the Hamerlys. Thank you. Women's Brunch Bunch -- Come join us ladies for brunch on Tuesday, March 16th, at 10 a.m. at Cafe Cappuccino (downtown on 6th Street). Variety Show -- On Sunday, April 18th, at 6:00 p.m., there will be a DaySpring variety show. Location TBA. Please join us as a DaySpring tradition makes a comeback--The Variety Show returns with all your favorites--yummy desserts to bid on in a silent auction, acts that include the truly gifted and talented . . . and some that are not quite so gifted or talented, the serious, the funny, and everything in between. Admission is free. All proceeds from the auction go to support DaySpring Youth activities. Starting this Sunday, we will have a sign up table for you to let us know if you can donate a dessert for the silent action. Please be thinking about that as well as considering putting together an act by yourself or with some friends to amuse, wow, and entertain your friends. Mom Support -- If you're a mom or mom-to-be, come join us for the DaySpring Moms Support group on Tuesday, March 23, at 8 p.m. at Rachel Craig's home (2920 Sturgis, Waco, 76708). See you there! Formation Attention Youth Parents -- The youth minister search committee is making good progress. At this point in the process, we would like to invite all of the youth parents to meet together for a time of discussion and reflection on the youth ministry. Please plan to meet on March 21 at 9:45 a.m. (during the Sunday school hour). We will meet in the kitchen off the narthex and move outside if the weather is nice. Hope to see you then! It's Time to reserve your child's spot at Children's Camp! Passport Children's Camp, for children who have completed grades 3-6, will take place July 19-22 at Camp Buckner. To learn more about Passport, go to http://www.passportcamps.org/home/kids/Kids%21_2010/Kids%21_Camp.html. The cost to attend is $238 and financial aid is available. Please contact Tiffani Harris ASAP if your child will be attending children's camp this year. Women's & Men's Lenten Prayer Groups -- During Lent, Contemplative Prayer begins at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays in Eric's office. Following prayers, from 6:00-7:00 p.m., women and men meet in separate groups for spiritual formation. All are invited to attend. Childcare is provided. Lenten Ministry of Silence Sundays During Lent, 8:45 AM - 9:30 AM, Stokes Chapel During this season of Lent, DaySpringers are invited to gather on Sunday mornings for a Ministry of Silence. Each week we will meditate on a passage from the Lenten scriptures to quiet our minds and lead us into silent prayer, allowing the Spirit to open our hearts and draw us deeper into the heart of God. Our time together will include sacred readings and contemplative chants to help cultivate a silence that permeates and nourishes our interior prayer. For those who are interested, we will have resources available with suggestions on how to use silence to deepen the experience of prayer. Childcare is not able to be provided during this time.
