Spiritual Direction

 

Spiritual Direction at DaySpring

​

Spiritual direction (or spiritual companioning) is the practice and discipline of companioning one another, cultivating growth in the spiritual life, and discerning the movements of the Holy Spirit. A spiritual director supports and companions one (the directee) as they grow in relationship with Jesus. 

  • The Holy Spirit is the true director, both people (director and directee) are listening for God and learning to notice where and how God is showing up and present.

  • In spiritual direction, the directee shares what they are experiencing in their relationship with God.

  • The role of the director is to prayerfully listen, attend, hold space for silence, offer questions, walk alongside, and encourage.

In individual spiritual direction, the spiritual director and directee meet one-on-one, every 4-6 weeks.

Certified spiritual directors have extensive training and formation and are seasoned in the art of spiritual direction. Spiritual directors continue tending their spiritual life by engaging in ongoing education, confidential supervision, and also meeting regularly with a spiritual director themselves.

Is Spiritual Direction for me?

You may seek spiritual direction for a variety of reasons, including

  • Desire to discern how God communicates personally with you

  • Desire to grow in intimacy with God

  • Identifying and trusting your own experiences with God

  • Recognizing God’s presence and activity in your daily life

  • Integrating faith into your daily life

  • Exploring or expanding your prayer life

  • Discerning and making difficult decisions

  • Sharing hopes, struggles, and losses

  • Developing a greater sensitivity for justice and concern for the poor and marginalized

 

What Spiritual Direction is NOT:

  • Pastoral Counseling

  • Therapy 

  • Life Coaching 

  • Mentoring 

  • Advice Giving

 

Confidentiality:

Confidentiality is a core pillar of spiritual direction, each individual director should have a conversation about confidentiality with their directee.    

Spiritual Companioning Groups

*It is encouraged that people participate in the Contemplative Life 101 prior to joining a Spiritual Companioning Group.


Spiritual Companioning Groups, meet once or twice a month committing to companion each other in seeking discernment, spiritual growth, and a deeper awareness of God's presence and work in daily life.Each group is generally comprised of a trained spiritual director and 4-7 group members, who are committed to practicing confidentiality for the building of trust, community, and a felt sense of safety within the group.
