Naomi House: Good reminders

I love Noche de Canción– our Spanish-language worship nights at Naomi House. There’s something about praising God along with people whose faith has been put to the test– faith that has carried them through a long journey, that sustains them in impossible circumstances. It reminds me that God is real, that the things we talk about in church are not just theoretical.

I love sitting in church with people from around the world. It reminds me that God is big, that I’m part of a Christian family that extends far beyond DaySpring or the U.S.

I love occasionally translating the sermon for our Spanish speakers. When I’m considering the theological implications of whether the blood of Christ is poured out ‘por’ us or ‘para’ us, I’m reminded of how crazy hard it is to learn a language, and I’m motivated to try to connect in spite of the language barrier.

I don’t always love helping people fill out job applications. It can be tedious and discouraging, and when I see how difficult it is to arrange childcare and transportation in order to take an unpleasant, low-paying job, I want to cry with frustration. But that moment reminds me of how fortunate I am. It reminds me of how impossible it is to be an immigrant, to be poor, to be far away from family. It reminds me that I’m a Christian, and that it’s right for me to care.
