The Homeless & Hunger: The Gospel Café
Advent:
“For nothing will be impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37)
The Need:
Hunger and homelessness are deeply interconnected realities: when people lack stable housing, they often struggle to store, prepare, or access nutritious food, which worsens food insecurity. Limited income, high living costs, and systemic barriers push many individuals and families into a cycle where meeting basic needs—shelter and daily meals—becomes a constant challenge.
Our Partner in Ministry:
The Gospel Café meets this need every week. It is nestled in downtown Waco near the Kate Ross Public Housing Complex. The Gospel Cafe is more than just a dining spot, it is a beacon of compassion and community. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and freshly made meals, the cafe serves everyone, especially those in need. Patrons praise the generous spirit of the staff, who serve with kindness and dedication. Each visit promises delightful dishes and a sense of belonging, making Gospel Cafe a cherished resource for both nourishment and support in the heart of the city.
How we can help:
As the story goes, DaySpring’s first pastor Burt Burleson wanted the church to be involved with a local community initiative some way. So one year, as a birthday gift for Pastor Burt, some members volunteered once a month to help serve lunch at The Gospel Cafe. It’s been an on-going ministry ever since 1997. Crossties Ecumenical Church purchased the property in 1996 and they continue to serve the local community providing spiritual guidance, support and lunch every W-Th-F. Each new chart year there’s an opportunity to sign up to help prepare and serve lunch with the rest of The Gospel Cafe volunteers. We’re off March and July. You’re welcome anytime to come and see, and we are grateful for your additional gifts to ensure that our community has the food they need through this incredibly valuable ministry.
